Open petition: Abolish Homes England & distribute its funding to Mayors to build council houses

Created by Christopher Payne
Closes on

Dissolve Homes England & distribute the up to £46B budget allocated to it for the next decade to the regional mayors, ringfenced to build council & social housing & affordable schemes, helping people to buy their first home at a reasonable price.

We want to prevent any subsidisation from the public purse of private rental schemes & corporate investors.

We are concerned that the multi-million pound development plan for Buxton’s town centre is what we see as an example of a national funding model undermining local accountability & control. Mayors should be encouraged to increase the number of small & medium sized local housebuilders delivering housing – which have declined by around 80% in number since 1980 according to some data. We believe these companies would help ensure that money stays in the local area & secures long-term employment for local people, supporting council house building and a skills strategy.
