Rejected petition: Remove planning permission requirements for front window shading
Rejected on
Shading windows is the simplest way to keep a house cool, yet installing external shading on the front of a UK house requires costly planning permission. This red tape puts lives, health and happiness at risk. Expand permitted development rights to allow external shading. It’s the cool thing to do.
Heatwaves kill thousands and make millions miserable. You can build a car port without planning permission, but shading front windows requires planning permission costing £548 plus fees.
It shouldn’t be easier to shade a car than a child’s bedroom. Expand permitted development rights to allow external shading on front walls. Shutters, brise soleil, awnings, Dutch canopies are all great options. Passive cooling is cheaper than air conditioning too.
