Rejected petition: Offenders who kill emergency workers should be ineligible for early release.
Rejected on
Anyone who commits an offence which leads to the death of a frontline emergency worker should not be considered for any early release scheme from prison. Such workers include Police, Fire and Ambulance officers but also include prison, health and social services personnel.
The Prison system is in crisis and action must be taken to ensure there are spaces to receive prisoners from court. However offences against staff who work to maintain public order/ safety and keep us all safe and secure should be considered as the most serious of offences. The death of an emergency worker, as a result of such offences, should automatically bar the offender from early release schemes. The low number of offenders would not have a significant impact on releasing prison spaces.
