Open Suspend UC work requirements while claimants with fit notes await a WCA

We want the Government to suspend work-related requirements, including Restart Scheme referrals, for Universal Credit claimants certified by their GP as not fit for work while awaiting a Work Capability Assessment, rather than leaving these requirements to the discretion of individual work coaches.

People awaiting a Work Capability Assessment can face lengthy delays. During this period, despite being medically deemed not fit for work by a GP, work coaches can impose work-related requirements and Restart Scheme referrals. We believe medical evidence should take precedence until the WCA decision is made. Claimants should not bear the health consequences of delays outside their control or risk sanctions for being unable to meet requirements that conflict with their medical needs.
