Open petition: Ban the sale, manufacture, import and release of sky lanterns
Created by Andrew Philip Nicholls
Closes on
Ban the sale, manufacture, import and release of sky lanterns. We believe sky lanterns pose severe risks of fatal injury to livestock and wildlife from ingested wire/bamboo, present an uncontrolled wildfire hazard to farmland and property, and cause widespread litter.
Sky lanterns travel unguided for miles before landing as hazardous waste on land and in water. Fallen frames can cause horrific internal injuries or death if eaten by livestock, while open flames can cause costly wildfires in crops, moorlands, and property. Though many local councils heavily restricted their releases on public land, we believe a total national ban on sales and releases is the only solution to protecting rural communities, rescue services, and wildlife across our country.
