Open petition: Update guidance on secondary uniform to support inclusion & comfort

Created by Aimee Pegram
Closes on

Update national guidance to urge secondary schools to transition from rigid formal attire (blazers, shirts, and ties) to comfortable, accessible alternatives such as polo shirts and tailored trousers.

We believe secondary school uniforms are outdated, and that replacing shirts, ties, and blazers with polo shirts and trousers would benefit all students.

Rising temperatures and frequent heatwaves due to climate change can make heavy, formal uniforms uncomfortably hot; relaxed attire could help ensure year-round comfort and focus.

In our view, it would also help lower costs for families, mirror modern workplaces, and ease the transition for Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) pupils in mainstream schools who struggle with sensory-heavy formal wear.
