Open petition: Require asylum claims to meet the same evidential standard as other routes

Created by Ronni McMenemy
Closes on

We ask the Government to require asylum claims to be assessed against the same standards of verified identity, evidence and background checks as other legal immigration routes, ensuring fixed decision timeframes, enforced removal after failed appeals, and a review of accommodation costs and impact.

We are concerned that asylum seekers can currently remain in the UK for years with less identity verification than someone applying for a work or family visa. We are calling for asylum claims to be checked against the same range and standard of proof, documentation and background checks as every other immigration route. We want requirements for fixed timeframes for decisions, verified identity and origin, enforced removal once appeals are exhausted, and an independent review of the cost and community impact of hotel accommodation.
