Open petition: Require new homes have rainwater harvesting systems & fund retrofitting in homes

Created by Saam Hodivala
Closes on

Mandate all new homes to have rainwater harvesting systems and fund grants to retrofit them in existing homes. Capturing winter rainfall for use during increasingly dry summers could reduce demand on mains water, ease pressure on reservoirs and help reduce flooding.

The UK receives substantial amounts of rainfall yet increasingly faces water shortages during dry summers. Too much winter rainfall can rapidly flow into drains, rivers and eventually the sea. Large-scale household rainwater storage could capture some of this water where it falls, for toilets, washing machines and gardens. With millions of new homes planned, we believe we should act now: mandate the fitting of rainwater storage systems in all suitable new homes and fund retrofitting these systems into existing homes.
