Open petition: Scrap the proposed 20p return scheme for single-use containers
Created by Tobiasz Skierka
Closes on
We want the Government to scrap the planned Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) scheduled for October 2027. We believe charging an extra 20p per bottle or can acts as an unfair upfront tax on everyday households and creates a massive logistical and financial burden for small independent retailers.
We believe the scheme penalises families by artificially inflating the cost of a weekly grocery shop before they can claw their money back. It could also force small convenience shops to store empty, dirty containers or face heavy fines.
We feel existing kerbside recycling bins are already widely used and highly effective. Instead of introducing a complex 20p deposit system that disrupts local businesses and increases living costs, the Government should focus on improving the current recycling infrastructure.
