Open Publish clearer criteria for UK Emergency Alert System usage

Following the 14 August 2026 nationwide wildfire alert, which we believe was used for general information rather than a specific life-threatening emergency, we call on the UK Government to publish clearer criteria for when the Emergency Alerts system may be deployed.

We think this would maintain trust for genuine emergencies. The Emergency Alerts system was designed to warn the public about imminent, life-threatening emergencies requiring urgent action, such as wildfires, severe flooding, and extreme storms. In our view, on 14 August 2026, an alert was sent nationwide as a general wildfire awareness reminder rather than for a specific, actionable emergency. We believe this risks undermining public trust, encouraging users to disable alerts on their phones. Without published clear criteria, future misuse may render this vital mechanism ineffective.
