Open petition: Require Family Inclusion During Treatment for Psychosis and at Discharge

We call for a mandatory family inclusion protocol when someone is admitted and treated for psychosis under Section 2/3 of the Mental Health Act (MHA) and when they are considered for discharge.

We think this can ensure families receive clinical information needed for safety, continuity of care, and relapse prevention.

In our view current consent based practices for including families do not fully account for impaired capacity, delusions, or lack of insight. We think families are denied information about medication, risk factors, therapeutic interventions, deterioration, and discharge planning. We believe this exclusion places families at risk, undermines relapse prevention, and leads to repeated crisis. Furthermore we think discharges are being done back into family homes without stabilisation, safety planning, or information that families need to provide effective support.
