Require all owned cats to be neutered by six months of age, with exemptions for cats being kept for breeding by a legally recognised and licensed breeder, or medical grounds by veterinary surgeons. Their neutered or exemption status should be recorded on the cat’s microchip database record.

Female cats can become sexually mature as early as four months old and become pregnant whilst still a kitten. Unplanned breeding can result in unwanted cats, growing feral populations and increased pressure on already overstretched rescue organisations.

We believe mandatory neutering, with appropriate exemptions and status recording through the existing microchip system, could reduce preventable litters, improve cat welfare and help tackle the growing number of unwanted cats.
