Open petition: Ensure emergency alerts in Wales are received in English & Welsh simultaneously

Created by Sally Sayer
Closes on

During the recent wildfire alert in Wales some people received a Welsh-only message that triggered an alarm but could not be understood by some. In our view this caused confusion and unnecessary stress.

Issuing alerts in both Welsh and English simultaneously could ensure vital safety information is available to all.

When people cannot interpret an emergency message instantly, they can experience a physical stress response before they can assess the situation. This reaction can increase heart rate, blood pressure and breathing which can be a dangerous physical trigger for vulnerable people such as the elderly or anyone with heart conditions, hypertension, COPD or asthma. Everyone should be able to understand the message immediately in order to respond safely and not experience unnecessary panic and confusion.
