Ban the press from publishing unproven allegations about victims and their families and require news organisations to disable or actively moderate comments on social-media posts about victims, the victim’s children or bereaved families.

We want the law to distinguish between reporting that on the outcome of a court case and on allegations relating to the victim or their family which may be made before that outcome. The former should be permissible and the latter should be prohibited. We also want stronger protections for victim’s children, victims and bereaved families by requiring news organisations to disable or actively moderate comments on social-media posts about deaths and traumatic cases, preventing hateful abuse and further speculation.
