Open petition: Introduce a partial-capacity disability benefit for those reducing work hours
Created by Emily Robertson
Closes on
We want the Government to introduce a ongoing disability benefit to top up the income of working individuals with chronic illnesses who need to reduce their hours on medical advice, without facing financial hardship.
The UK benefits system can trap workers with chronic illnesses like fibromyalgia. Many can do daily tasks independently, making them ineligible for PIP. Yet, full-time work can cause severe pain and exhaustion. When occupational health advises reducing hours, they face a major pay cut. Means-tested benefits like Universal Credit are blocked if a partner earns well, leaving them trapped. We believe workers shouldn't have to break their bodies to pay bills - we need a financial bridge to support partial hours.
