Open petition: Protect DLA and linked disability support during PIP challenges at age 16

Created by Ruth Kerrison
Closes on

We want the Government to change the DLA-to-PIP transition rules so that, when a young person is required to transfer to PIP at 16, their existing DLA award & linked disability-related UC entitlement are protected while an adverse PIP decision is challenged, up to the original DLA award end date.

Disabled young people must move from DLA to PIP at 16. An adverse PIP decision can end an existing DLA award and linked UC disability support, although their needs and costs remain.

Families may then wait many months for an appeal, with no control over delays, causing debt, poverty and lost opportunities in education, work and independence.

Backdating cannot undo this harm. Existing DLA and linked support should continue during a challenge, up to the original DLA end date.
