Open petition: Review single sex spaces guidance requiring use on the basis of biological sex

Created by Arden Chan
Closes on

Review and revoke approval of the statutory code of practice requiring single-sex spaces in England, Scotland, and Wales to be designated and used on the basis of biological sex.

In August 2026, an official statutory code of practice from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) came into force and stated that single-sex spaces can legally restrict access based on a person’s biological sex rather than their gender identity. However, we believe this guidance could do more harm than good.

We are concerned that rates of hate crime may increase. Transgender and gender non-conforming individuals are already subjected to discrimination daily and we believe continued implementation of the guidance would only increase hostility to individuals.
