Decision-makers should experience the same personal financial consequences of government policy as the people required to bear them. Accountability is weakened when public funding insulates MPs from ordinary costs affected by their decisions. A Shared Financial Consequences Principle would ensure MPs have a direct financial stake in the real-world impact of their decisions, while protecting legitimate additional costs of parliamentary duties.
