Open Legalise pepper spray, review street intimidation legislation & fund more police

We call on the Government to legalise licensed carrying of pepper spray for self-defence for the public, review legalisation regarding individuals who intimidate or harass women or girls in public particularly at night and fund an increase in police forces in high-risk areas at night.

Many women and girls feel unsafe walking alone at night due to intimidating behaviour from individuals often under the influence of drugs or alcohol. UK law currently bans pepper spray under the Firearms Act 1968, leaving limited self-defence options. We want the Government to legalise the right for members of the public to carry pepper-spray for self-defence and would require a license.

The Government should also launch a review into strengthening legislation such as the Public Order Acts and Protection from Harassment Act 1997, which includes strengthening penalties for street intimidation.
