Open petition: Fund retraining schemes for employees displaced by AI
Created by Richard Stelmach
Closes on
Provide funding for proactive retraining schemes targeted at workers displaced by AI. Investing in upskilling now can protect the UK tax base, reduce the future burden on the welfare system, and fill skill shortages in emerging sectors. Failing to act may lead to severe economic inequality.
AI risks mass unemployment in the UK, shifting any new tech jobs and tax gains to the USA. The UK government must plan for such an event with retraining schemes:
- Prevent structural unemployment
- Protect the tax base
- Maintain consumer spending
- Proactive training is cheaper than long-term Universal Credit payments.
- Lower NHS strain
- Fill existing skill gaps
