Open petition: Reverse excluding death by dangerous driving from the early release scheme

We ask the Government to reverse its decision to exclude people convicted of causing death by dangerous driving and serving Standard Determinate Sentences from the Government’s early release scheme, and to restore their eligibility under the safeguards applying to other eligible prisoners.

We recognise the devastating impact on victims and their families. However, we feel death by dangerous driving covers very different cases, and that courts already reflect seriousness and culpability in the sentence imposed.

We believe a blanket exclusion removes any recognition of rehabilitation, good behaviour or reduced risk, and that it also affects innocent families and children. We feel the early release scheme still protects the public through supervision and licence conditions.
