Open Reform Army medical entry standards to reduce unnecessary rejections

The UK Government should urgently review and reform Army medical entry standards, including JSP 950, so applicants are assessed on current health, prognosis and role suitability, with greater use of individual assessments, medical waivers and independent appeals.

Around 32,000 Army applicants were reportedly rejected on medical grounds in 2024–25, while the Army continues to struggle to meet recruitment targets. Medical standards are essential, but applicants with historic or resolved conditions may be excluded despite being fit to serve. The system should focus more on current health, individual circumstances, prognosis and the requirements of the role, rather than relying too heavily on past medical history.
