Enact the single government-led regulator under the Parking (Code of Practice) Act 2019, cap parking charges, ban arbitrary debt recovery fees, and mandate a statutory £20 compensation payout to motorists for successful appeals against invalid charges.
We feel that private parking has become a racket designed to fleece hardworking citizens through intimidation. Operators can issue baseless charges and automated rejections with zero financial risk. We think that industry claims that regulation threatens their viability prove their business model relies on ripping people off; any resulting operator failure is justified. The Government must exercise its powers under the 2019 Act and mandate a £20 payout for successful appeals, mirroring other regulated sectors, to stop frivolous ticketing.
