We believe the rate in which data centres are being built in the UK means there are little to no restrictions on them. We call for new nationwide regulations on data centres to minimise local and environmental impacts.

The proposal for restrictions, inspired by Australia, should include: requiring data centres fund their own grid connections and add as much new power to the grid as they consume, strictly consume renewable energy only or be fined, not be built within close proximity of schools or residential neighbourhoods, do not cause excess noise/light pollution that disturb local wildlife habitats, a 20% Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), and a ban on their construction in the event of a drought/water shortage.
