Open petition: Independent review of laws and police practices affecting freedom of speech
Created by Silkie Carlo
Closes on
The Government should commission an independent national review of laws and police practices affecting freedom of speech in the UK. The review should examine laws governing online speech, communications offences and protest, and make recommendations to ensure free speech is protected.
We believe free speech is in serious decline in Britain. Thousands of people have been arrested for controversial speech, online jokes and peaceful protest. We feel a patchwork of laws no longer fit for purpose has given police a wide license to censor and arrest people for the things they think and say.
We want the Government to restore Britain’s long and proud tradition of upholding free speech. The Prime Minister must launch a free speech reset.
