Open petition: Require level 4 teaching diploma & DBS checks for all music instrument teachers

Reform the Music Education Framework to protect children and vulnerable adults from this existing unregulated sector of education by requiring every music instrument teacher to be qualified in teaching to a minimum level 4 diploma and have a DBS check.

We believe requiring an Ofqual Level 4 diploma as the benchmark for instrumental music teaching professionalises the sector by embedding evidence-based pedagogy, technical rigor, and standard accountability. Crucially, coupling this with mandatory safeguarding training helps protect children and vulnerable adults within vulnerable 1-to-1 learning environments. Tutors learn to enforce professional boundaries, and prevent physical or auditory injuries. Mandatory standards can elevate teaching quality.
