Open petition: Improve safeguarding and support for dementia care
Created by Rachel Stevenson
Closes on
The Government must appoint a Minister for Dementia Care, ensure all nurses are aware of their obligation to report harmful practice to the barring service and NMC, appoint a safeguarding nurse for every dementia care setting and mandate statutory CCTV in all dementia care settings.
Also, the Government should:
- Review the effectiveness of the legal obligation to provide a reference
- work to ensure that, where there have been legitimate concerns about the suitability of an employee, these can be conveyed without fear of litigation or reprisal
- Ensure all staff are trained in iatrogenic harm
- make sure all dementia settings have mental health nurses present
- issue guidance making clear that a staff member's DBS check cannot be a guarantee of future behaviour.
