Open petition: Tighten Election Spending Rules to Prevent Mass Letter Campaigns
Created by Connor George David Whiteley
Closes on
We call on the Government to ensure that all mass letters sent by political parties count towards legal election spending limits. These limits exist to keep elections fair and free from undue influence. We believe the current loophole lets wealthy donors, not voters, shape election outcomes.
Current rules let parties send letters to every voter during an election without it counting towards their legal spending limits, as long as they avoid naming the candidate or the election. Spending limits exist to keep elections fair, competitive and free from undue influence. We believe this loophole lets wealth shape outcomes rather than voters, as some reports have indicated in recent by-elections and council elections.
