Open petition: Review policies for seized dogs to ensure their welfare
Created by john michaels
Closes on
Review policies for seized dogs to ensure their welfare. Police should need clear evidence, written reasons, urgent welfare reviews and court/independent oversight before keeping non-banned family dogs with no history in kennels for weeks or months.
Dogs seized in investigations can be held in kennels for weeks or months while police and CPS decisions are awaited. Owners may have no visit rights, no guaranteed updates, no clear timescale and no written reason why the dog cannot return home under conditions. Dogs are living animals, not evidence in storage. The law should require urgent welfare reviews for continued detention.
