Open petition: Mandate the term "Care Experienced" in all public sector communications
Created by Kerri Moore
Closes on
We call on the government to mandate the term "Care Experienced" across all professional and legal terminology in public sector communications. We feel that "Care Leaver" has a negative connotation to it which for many reinforces the feelings that no one cares.
We feel the term "care leaver" implies care has left us, creating a cliff-edge where support ends. As recent reports on deaths of those leaving care tragically show, it truly feels like care abandons us. We believe there needs to be a language shift that doesn't apply a negative narrative to the Care Experienced Young Person.
Language shapes reality. Shifting to "Care Experienced" restores dignity, recognises resilience, and tackles the systemic neglect that leaves vulnerable people isolated.”
