Open petition: Require all schools in England to make school uniform optional
Created by Brendan Cox
Closes on
We call for the Government to require schools to make school uniform optional in England, allowing pupils and families to choose suitable clothing while schools retain reasonable safety, safeguarding and PE requirements. This aims to support inclusion, wellbeing, sensory needs and affordability.
We believe compulsory uniform can create unnecessary barriers to education. Pupils have different sensory needs, disabilities, SEND needs, cultural requirements, body shapes, temperature tolerances and family circumstances.
We believe no child should struggle to attend or participate in education because of clothing. Schools could still offer uniform and set reasonable standards for safety and appropriateness, while giving pupils the freedom to choose suitable clothing in which they feel comfortable and able to learn.
