Open petition: Review Social Services and Child Protection Procedures for Section 20 powers
Created by Amira Henard
Closes on
We call for an urgent review into the use of section 20 powers. We are concerned that there is a lack of oversight, transparent decision-making, proper recording of consent, regular reviews and accessible complaints procedures. Parents must be told how to challenge decisions and raise concerns.
We call for an urgent review to look at how to reform the child-protection system to prevent unnecessary separation, confusion and long-term harm to children and families. Parents must not be pressured or misled into agreeing to Section 20 accommodation. They must receive clear, accurate information, independent legal advice and a genuine explanation of their rights. We believe if they have demonstrated that no solicitor was present during the period they signed, then the application ought to be automatically denied.
