Rejected petition: Hold a national referendum on assisted dying for terminally ill adults

We call on the UK Government to give the people of the United Kingdom the opportunity to decide, through a national referendum, whether assisted dying should be legalised for terminally ill adults, subject to strict safeguards.
A previous Bill passed the House of Commons but subsequently ran out of time in the House of Lords. On 11th September 2026, a further Bill was marginally defeated in the House of Commons.
We therefore believe the people of the United Kingdom should have the opportunity to consider the arguments and evidence for themselves and make a final democratic decision.
This petition does not ask the Government to predetermine the result of a referendum, only that the people be given the right to decide.
Why was this petition rejected?
