Open petition: Amend Public Order Act 1986 to include protections on the grounds of disability

Created by Lauren Hodzic
Closes on

As it currently stands, the Public Order Act 1986 protects against inciting hatred on the grounds of race, religion and sexual orientation but not of disability. I want the Government to amend that legislation to extend the protections under that Act to disability.

The Public Order Act 1986 protects against publishing content that incites hatred based on race, religion and sexual orientation. Under this legislation, disability is not currently protected in this way and it may be legal to publish content, regardless of how harmful the rhetoric might be to the disabled community. We believe this legislation should be updated and ensure that disabled people are protected against content created to incite negativity and hate.
