Open petition: Ban the use of carbon dioxide gas to slaughter pigs

Created by Jane Kidd
Closes on

Set a firm deadline to ban high-concentration CO₂ gas stunning of pigs in England. The Government has already committed to consult on a ban. We want legislation and a clear, short timetable to replace CO₂ with higher-welfare stunning methods.

Most UK pigs are stunned using high concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO₂). This method can cause pain, fear and respiratory distress before pigs lose consciousness. The Government and industry are already considering alternative stunning methods. We believe this work should be accelerated, with a clear timetable to phase out high-concentration CO₂ stunning and replace it with more humane alternatives.
