Open petition: Require telecom providers to verify caller ID and block spoofed UK phone numbers
Created by Piotr Marek Staskiewicz
Closes on
Require all UK telecom providers to implement network-level caller ID authentication across mobile, landline and VoIP services, and to block calls where a displayed UK number is identified as spoofed. Ofcom should establish and enforce a common verification standard.
Scammers can manipulate caller ID so calls appear to come from legitimate UK mobile or landline numbers. This makes blocking and reporting individual numbers ineffective, as criminals can simply display another number. Existing measures do not prevent all spoofed calls. A consistent verification system across UK networks would help stop fraudulent calls before they reach consumers, while allowing legitimate calls from businesses, hospitals and other genuine callers to continue.
