Rejected petition: Reaffirm Northern Ireland’s constitutional status within the United Kingdom

Rejected on

We ask the UK Government to reaffirm Northern Ireland’s constitutional position within the United Kingdom and its commitment to the principle of consent, under which any change to Northern Ireland’s status should occur only with the consent of a majority of its people.

Northern Ireland’s constitutional future should continue to be determined by the democratic wishes of its people. We believe the UK Government should clearly reaffirm Northern Ireland’s place within the United Kingdom and uphold the principle of consent established by the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement. This would provide clarity, stability and reassurance that no constitutional change can take place without the consent of a majority of people in Northern Ireland.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We are not clear in what way the Government's position might be thought to have changed such that reaffirmation would be relevant. The new PM has (since you submitted the petition) discussed the situation in NI:
