Open petition: Grant devolved powers to England & create an elected First Minister of England
Created by Liam Paddy Joshua Rowbury
Closes on
Grant devolved powers to England, so that a devolved English Government operates within a framework comparable to the relationship between the US Federal Government and state governors.
The UK Government should retain defence, foreign affairs and national policing, while an elected English First Minister governs England in partnership with regional mayors.
The UK Government has left England without a devolved government, while decisions affecting English communities remain heavily centralised at Westminster. We believe England deserves greater democratic accountability and a stronger voice over its own domestic affairs. An elected English First Minister would work with regional mayors, while the UK Government in Westminster would focus on UK-wide responsibilities such as defence and foreign affairs.
