Open petition: Require nurseries to have individual SEND support plans before a child starts

Parents can be told that a nursery can meet their additional needs without being told exactly what support will be provided. Children who are non-verbal or have significant developmental and communication difficulties may be unable to tell their parents when they are distressed, who cared for them.

We believe parents should know, before their child starts, who is responsible for their support, what staffing arrangements are in place, what relevant training staff have and how distress or dysregulation will be managed.

This would give families greater clarity and accountability and help ensure children with significant SEND receive appropriate support from the beginning of their nursery placement.
