Rejected petition: Grant greater powers to Councils with waterways to become the senior Custodians

Rejected on

The Government to grant powers to Local Authorities for custodianship of waterways that are an integral part of their community.
The Canal & River Trust are failing in the care of our waterways.
Granting powers to a democratic Council would give more accountability on how waterways are managed.

Gloucester’s Historic Dock is dying.
The Canal & River Trust has proven they cannot care for our waterways alone, due to financial pressures.
Giving some of its decision making powers within sections of its waterway to a democratically elected body, would give more accountability on how our waterways are managed.
For Gloucester that would mean the Dock custodianship being in the hands of the people, not a struggling charitable trust & delivering a brighter future for its next 200 years.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

I'm afraid we find this petition unclear. Some local authorities already act as custodians /owners of local waterways (rivers, docks and canals). Are these new powers to enable local authorities to seize control of waterways from current custodians/owners, whether public bodies, charities or other private organisations?

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
