Rejected petition: Protect Children From Drowning: Strengthen Safety Around Public Ponds
Rejected on
We call on the UK Government and Parliament to introduce stronger and consistent safety requirements for public ponds and other accessible bodies of water located in or next to public spaces, particularly where young children can reach the water.
Every publicly accessible pond should be subject to an appropriate water-safety risk assessment, with particular consideration given to:
- Depth and shape of pond to prevent drowning
- Proximity to homes, playgrounds, schools & nurseries
- Child resistant gates or suitable barriers around the pond
- Readily available lifesaving equipment
- Clear warning signs to discourage unsupervised access
- Secure covers or grids where technically and environmentally appropriate
