Open petition: Strengthening GMC Safeguards Against Vexatious and Abusive Complaints

Created by Kirsty MacGregor
Closes on

Review and strengthen the GMC’s safeguards against systematic, vexatious, malicious & stacked complaints. Legislation should require assessment of complaint patterns & their cumulative impact, independent oversight, & effective protection for doctors against abuse of the fitness-to-practise process.

In our view, the GMC’s complaints process is vulnerable to weaponisation when individuals or organisations use repeated, coordinated and strategically timed allegations to trigger investigations, prolong regulatory scrutiny or damage a doctor’s reputation. We believe stronger safeguards could help identify patterns, scrutinise motives and evidence, and prevent regulatory processes from being exploited for purposes unrelated to patient safety. We are concerned that multiple doctors have experienced unfair treatment as a result of such complaints.
