Open petition: Legalise right to work & pay taxes for asylum seekers during asylum process
Created by Katherine R Hlalat
Closes on
We call on the Government to legalise the right for asylum seekers to work and pay tax whilst they’re awaiting a decision on their asylum application. Many asylum seekers come to the UK as they believe life is in better in a democracy; they may wait up to 5 years for a decision and cannot work.
Many are already able and willing to work, so we call on the Government to legalise their right to work and pay taxes in the UK. We have met many asylum seekers who are desperate to work and make their own money, instead of sitting around all day and doing nothing.
Many are prepared to do low-paid jobs which are difficult to fill, such as working in agriculture and the hospitality sector. By allowing them to work, the financial burden as a result of providing asylum seekers with state benefits to survive could be reduced.
