Open petition: Prevent seizure of dogs verified as being under breed minimum height limits
Created by Libby Culpin
Closes on
We ask the Government to amend the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 to make it unlawful for authorities to seize a dog based on visual breed "typing" if the owner provides professional veterinary certification that the dog fails the statutory minimum height requirements for that banned breed type.
Currently, the definition of an XL Bully used under this law includes strict minimum height thresholds. However, many responsible owners of shorter, non-banned bully breeds (such as Pocket or Standard American Bullies) live in constant fear. Because application of the law relies heavily on subjective visual profiling, dogs with a "bully look" are at risk of being seized purely on appearance, even if they do not meet the height criteria.
We believe prohibiting seizure when veterinary proof of height is provided will save innocent pets.
