Open petition: Make elected governments legally accountable for manifesto commitments

Created by Lee Hailstone
Closes on

Require elected governments to be formally accountable for the manifesto commitments on which they were elected. Create an independent system to track delivery and require explanations for broken pledges, with meaningful financial penalties for parties that unjustifiably abandon them.

Voters make decisions based on the commitments parties put before them at an election. Yet once elected, governments can abandon or reverse major manifesto pledges with little formal accountability. This damages public trust and weakens confidence in democracy. An independent body should track manifesto delivery, require public explanations for significant departures and, where pledges are unjustifiably abandoned, impose substantial financial penalties on the governing party.
