Open petition: Adherents to the Churches of England & Scotland to advise on Church appointments
Created by John Lee
Closes on
We believe appointments in the Churches of England & Scotland should each be advised on exclusively by adherents to those faiths. Amend the Church Appointments (Repeal of Discriminatory Provision) Bill to further limit who is able to advise on appointments rather than removing existing prohibitions.
The Churches of England and Scotland are Protestant churches. Irrespective of whether they are, or remain, established churches, we believe the appointment of Church leaders should not be influenced by those who do not adhere to the faith. Currently, appointments in both churches cannot be advised on by Roman Catholics or Jews.
These provisions are indeed discriminatory, but the solution should be to limit this power to adhering Protestants of the two Churches concerned rather than extend it to individuals of any, or no, religion.
