Rejected petition: Remove VAR from English professional football

Rejected on

We want the UK Government to work with the relevant football governing bodies to review the use of VAR in English professional football, with a view to removing VAR from the professional game.

VAR was introduced to improve refereeing decisions, but it has also brought delays, interruptions and continued disagreement over subjective decisions.

We believe football should retain the authority of the on-field referee and preserve the speed, atmosphere and spontaneity of the game.

We are asking the Government to work with football’s governing bodies to review VAR, with a view to removing it from English professional football.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

Decisions about how to referee football matches is a matter for organisers, not the Government or House of Commons.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
