Open petition: Ban the production, sale and import of lab-grown meat for human consumption.
Created by Louise Sibanda
Closes on
We ask the Government to legislate to ban the production, sale and importation of cell-cultivated (lab-grown) meat for human consumption in the UK. No such product is yet authorised here. Parliament, not a regulatory process, should decide whether it enters our food supply.
The Food Standards Agency is assessing several applications and aims to complete safety assessments by early 2027. Italy banned cultivated meat in 2023. These products have no long-term record in the human diet, and reviewers have raised open questions about their safety and nutrition. We believe a ban would protect British livestock farming and rural communities, uphold UK food sovereignty, and take a precautionary approach to a technology not yet tested over the long term.
