Open petition: Prevent publication of addresses of people charged but not convicted of a crime

Created by Emma Parr
Closes on

Change the law to prevent the publication of the home addresses of people who have been charged but not convicted. Police should also be required to respect requests for media anonymity where a person is vulnerable or at risk, unless there is an overriding legal or public interest.

A vulnerable person may be arrested while experiencing severe anxiety or mental health difficulties and feel unable to answer police questions, resulting in a “no comment” interview. They may later be charged without a court having determined their guilt. Publishing their home address, particularly when they live alone, can create serious safety and welfare concerns. The law and guidance on the publication of defendants’ addresses should be urgently reviewed to prevent addresses from being published.
