Open petition: Ban suspended sentences for sexual and violent offences against children
Created by Richard Williams
Closes on
Change the law so custodial sentences for sexual and serious violent offences against children cannot be suspended. When a court decides an offence against a child is serious enough for custody, we believe that sentence should be served in custody.
Children are particularly vulnerable victims of sexual and violent crime. We believe that when a court decides an offence against a person under 18 is serious enough to warrant a custodial sentence, that sentence should not be suspended. Courts would still determine the appropriate length of sentence based on each case. We want legislation to ensure custodial sentences for sexual and serious violent offences against children are served in custody.
